Alpha Phi Alpha is making a difference in the lives of children by Bowling for Kids’ Sake! Please join the Pacific Northwest Alpha men to make an impact in the life of a child!

*        Join us Thursday April 23rd from 9-11am at the Portland State  University bowling lanes as one of our community service projects.
*        All fundraising is done virtually through the Bowl for Kids’ Sake website – www.bbbsnorthwest.org.
*        Each team is responsible for raising $625, which is done easily through the website.
How do I fund raise?  As a bowler, you set your own individual fundraising goal. We’re asking each bowler to raise a minimum of $125, so that your whole team raises at least $625—that’s just 5 friends pledging $25 each or 10 friends pledging $12.50 each)

Five easy steps to get started:

1.    Go to www.bbbsnorthwest.org and enter the Bowl for Kids' Sake Headquarters.
2.    Click on REGISTER HERE.
3.    Agree to the waiver and agreement.
4.   Then you can choose to "Start a team" by entering your information.
5.    After your team and page is set, all you need to do is send the stock emails out from your page and watch the money start rolling in.

FAQs 2009 Bowl for Kids’ Sake

What is Bowl for Kids’ Sake?  Bowl for Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters’ largest fundraiser of the year. All of the money we raise goes directly towards making matches.  It works just like a walk-a-thon or bike race – but for us, we go bowling! Don’t worry – you don’t have to be a good bowler and you may even get a prize for your low score or number of gutter balls!!!  Bowl for Kids’ Sake is about helping kids by raising money through our on-line fundraising tool at bbbsnorthwest.org.  We make it easy and fun for you and your team members.

What does a team captain do?  A Team Captain is someone who can recruit four more people to bowl with him or her. As Team Captain, all you have to do is help your teammates get registered, and then motivate and excite them to ask their friends, family, colleagues, or whoever they can get to support them—through our Bowl for Kids’ Sake website.

How many people are on a team?  A team consists of five fundraisers and bowlers – so if you are a Team Captain, we ask you to recruit four more people to fundraise and bowl with you.

Why do we bowl if this is about raising money for kids?   To have fun, celebrate your fundraising success, and meet other supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters.  All bowlers receive a commemorative t-shirt, two free games of bowling, and free shoe rental. There will be all sorts of prizes for top fundraisers and low bowling scores; and we’ll have free pizza, beverages, and entertainment.

Bowlers should ask everyone they know to support them. Ask your family, friends, co-workers, doctor, accountant…anyone!! Before you know it, you will not only have reached, but probably surpassed, your goal.
Plus, we’ve made it really easy to ask people for pledges:

1.   Online registration is now available!  Go to bbbsnorthwest.org and click on “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” to register and reserve your lane at a bowling party.   You can use our e-mail templates to contact everyone in your e-mail address book. They will get a link e-mailed to them, so that they can donate on-line to your team with a credit card, and their pledges will automatically be counted towards your goal. Our website tracks your progress too.

2.   You can also use the pre-printed pledge sheet and carry it with you to work, to appointments, or while you run errands. Ask people you come into contact with to support you. And the best part is, you don’t need to collect the money. Big Brothers Big Sisters will take care of the billing.

How much time does it take?  Raising money is easy. Between the website and your pledge sheet, you should be able to reach your fundraising goal very quickly. On bowling day, your team of five bowlers gets to bowl two games – this should take about two hours at a relaxed, fun pace. It also leaves time for you to get some food and drinks, and to socialize with your teammates and other bowlers. The bowling is scheduled into 2-hour shifts; however, you should plan to arrive about 15 minutes early so that you can sign in, get your shoes, and find the right ball.

I’m not a good bowler. Do I need to get a good score?
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is not about bowling – it’s about helping kids. So your score doesn’t matter. For bowlers and supporters alike, the greatest satisfaction comes from knowing you’ve helped kids right here in our community.

What does the money get used for?
The money raised at Bowl for Kids’ Sake goes directly to matching children with adult mentors. It costs $1,000 to match one child to one adult, so the more people who raise money, the greater the number of kids who benefit.

I work for a company that may want to be a corporate sponsor. Who can I talk to about that?   Corporate sponsors are a huge part of the event’s success. We have a complete sponsor packet that we could send to your company and our sponsorship levels are on the Bowl for Kids’ Sake website.

My company has a Matching Gift program. Can I use my pledges for a Matching Gift?
Each company has their own set of rules around their Matching Gift program. You should contact the person within your company who handles the program.

October 2nd, 2008

In an additional effort to reach out to the youth of Oakland and the East Bay, an effort led by Brother Gregory Hunt has begun to incorporate Alpha Academy into OTL. Alpha Academy brings adult male professionals together with male high school and middle school students to discuss decision making skills, motivation, and a variety of other issues covering academic performance, teen pregnancy prevention, career goals, and contemporary challenges. With the help of Brother Kenneth Wynn and his access to facilities along with him being a caterer, the ball for Alpha Academy has already started rolling smoothly. That along with a commitment from Brothers of OTL could be the beginning of something big. If you would like more information about Alpha Academy and/or want to commit to being a mentor, please attend the next meeting on October 8th at 6pm at Regency Tower Apartments.

October 2nd, 2008

With this year being a historic election with Barack Obama being the first African-American Presidential Nominee in US history, OTL has become even more inspired to get involved with this election. On October 11th brothers will hit the streets starting at 10:30 a.m. to inspire voters and also help register those who are not. Brothers will scour Oakland and target the demographic who are more than likely not registered. No matter what party you are in favor of, we all encourage everyone to go to the polls on November 4th, 2008 and you?re your voice be heard. Those who would like to get involved in the registration campaign please contact brother Dwayne Aikens for more information.
